GRN Steel

Green. Recyclable. Necessary.

Delivering a net zero carbon solution

For more than 50 years, Radius Recycling has built a reputation for exceptional customer service by delivering innovative products to our customers.

Our steel products - including rebar, coiled rebar, wire rod, merchant bar, and other specialty items - are used in the construction of essential infrastructure such as bridges, highways, and housing developments.

The launch of our GRN Steel product line provides our customers with net zero carbon steel solutions as they build tomorrow's essential infrastructure.

FAQ

GRN stands for Green, Recyclable, Necessary. GRN Steel sets the standard for sustainability and quality without compromising on affordability - delivering a net zero carbon solution.
Our steel manufacturing operation, Cascade Steel Rolling Mills, leverages Radius Recycling's integrated business model by sourcing much of its metal feedstock from our own recycling facilities.

We power our state-of-the-art mini-mill using primarily carbon-free hydroelectricity which greatly reduces the environmental impact of our operation and the overall carbon content of our finished steel products - rebar, coiled rebar, wire rod, merchant bar, and other specialty items.

Cascade steel supports the construction of essential infrastructure such as bridges, highways, and housing developments.

GRN Steel takes it one step further by offsetting the limited Scope 1 and 2 emissions generated during our steel manufacturing process, offering a net zero carbon solution for our customers.
Net zero carbon means that the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions released into the environment while manufacturing GRN Steel are balanced by an equivalent amount removed from the environment.

By offering a net zero carbon solution, we are working to further our Sustainability goals which are aligned with the Paris Climate Agreement and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and support our customers as they advance climate commitments across multiple industries.

For more than 50 years, Cascade has built a reputation for exceptional customer service by delivering innovative products to our customers. Our GRN Steel products support the construction of essential infrastructure such as bridges, highways, and housing, and advance our efforts to help customers meet their sustainability goals and support the transition to a low-carbon future.

GRN Steel represents an important step toward reducing the carbon intensity of our finished products and engaging our supply chain.
GRN Steel offers a net zero carbon solution by addressing the limited Scope 1 and 2 emissions generated during our manufacturing process through a carbon offset and renewable energy credit purchase program.

Addressing Scope 1 Emissions
Our state-of-the-art Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) allows us to produce steel with a much smaller carbon footprint than with a Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF), which is a technology used in the production of roughly 70% of steel output worldwide. While EAF technology currently offers significant environmental advantages over BOF technology, it still results in some GHG emissions during operation. Addressing our Scope 1 emissions using a carbon offset program offers a bridge to future innovations that we believe will further reduce emissions from the manufacturing process.

Addressing Scope 2 Emissions
Our Scope 2 emissions are emissions from “grid” electricity we use to power our operations. These emissions are minimal because our Mill, located in McMinnville, Oregon, is powered primarily by carbon-free hydropower. Eliminating our Scope 2 emissions through purchases of Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) ensures GRN Steel products are manufactured using 100% net carbon-free electricity.
Radius Recycling partners with ACT Commodities, a carbon offset broker, to source carbon offset projects to address Scope 1 emissions from manufacturing GRN Steel. We will hold these purchased credits, and upon the sale of GRN Steel, Cascade will retire credits on behalf of a customer in an amount commensurate with carbon footprint of steel ordered.

We address our minimal Scope 2 emissions by purchasing and retiring RECs each year. These RECs allow us to achieve net carbon-free electricity at our steel manufacturing facility.
